The Journey of Lent

During the season of Lent, we prepare for Christ’s death on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter. Without Good Friday, Easter has little meaning, little victory. However, Lent is not a time to be morose or feel guilty; it is a time to open ourselves to the power of God’s grace in ways we normally avoid. It is a time to grow toward God, alongside our brothers and sisters in the church.

In the Lenten tradition of self-examination and repentance, consider taking up one or more of the following suggested disciplines during the coming weeks:
  • Engage in the worship and study life of the church
  • Receive Holy Communion weekly during Lent
  • Focus new time and energy in prayer
  • Increase your monetary giving
  • Observe a fast, either one meal or one day per week
  • Fast from some other activity in your life
  • Take on a form of mission service, weekly if possible
  • Seek reconciliation in your life
  • Take on any task on behalf of another, as an act of love.

The goal of these disciplines is not to prove our willpower or worthiness; it is to learn about ourselves through experience and conversation. If you have trouble with something you’ve committed to, notice and pay attention to what’s happening, rather than judging yourself. Find a trusted friend or group to help you process what you experience. And in all things, try to stay aware of God’s love for you and for the world.
